- ruby red turning to maroon with age
- Aroma:
- intense and characteristic, turning to ethereal with age

- dry and full-bodied, sometimes vaguely semi-sweet, acidic and medium bodied
- Minimum alcohol content:
- 11.5%
- Aging:
- at least 14 months of which, at least six months in wood. Usually up to two years, it may be aged up to four years with good vintages
