- area centered around Asti and stretching west to Castelnuovo Don Bosco and north to the banks of the Po River

- Barbera d'Asti (85-100%), Freisa and/or Grignolino and/or Dolcetto (0-15%)
- Colour:
- intense ruby red turning to maroon with age
- Aroma:
- intense and characteristic, turning to ethereal with age
- Taste:
- dry, vaguely abboccato (semi-sweet) when young, acquires round taste with age. Harmonious with slight bitter finish
- Minimum alcohol content:
- 12.5%
- Aging:
- not to be released until March following the vintage year; usually up to three years

- Superiore denomination with 1 year of obliged aging of which six months in wood
- Serving temperature of wine Barbera d'Asti:
- Serve the wine at: 64° - 68° Farheneit (18° - 20° Celsius) opening the bottle at least two hours before serving
