Grignolino (DOC)
DOC wines
- Grignolino d'Asti
- Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese
- Piemonte Grignolino
Area of production
The area of production of this wine only includes Asti and Alessandria in Piedmont. The "Grignolino" grape is autochthonous
in Piedmont and its ideal habitat is in the hilly terrains to the north of Asti and Alessandria.
DOC status
The name derives from the area of the production; it might come from "grigné" (to smile in the dialect of Asti) or
from "grignola", the old Piedmontese name for grape-stone; in fact the berries of this grape have got little grape-stones.
Organoleptic characteristics
It is made with Grignolino grape with the possible addition of Freisa (up to 10%).
It has a light-brilliant ruby red color, but its color depends on the crop; it may assume orange tonalities with its aging. It has an
intense fragrance, a vinous but very fresh and delicate bouquet. Dry flavour, lively and pleasantly bitterish. Minimum alcohol level:
11° , rarely its alcoholic content is 13°. The best year is 1988.
Tasting the wine
It isn't required aging; the wine is better in the first two years of age but it may age until three years. It should be served at
cellar temperature (16 to 18 degrees C) and uncorked at the time of serving.
Gastronomic accompaniments
Excellent with typical Italian hors d'oeuvres, perfect with boiled meats and roasted white meats but also with "salame",
"agnolotti" and cheese.
